- The coloration on the dorsal side can vary and often times is almost uniformly brown with irregularly dispersed white splotches.

- P. gracilis is distributed in the eastern United States, south of the Delaware River and east of the Missouri River.
- The animal are 8-30mm long and 1.5-6mm wide.
- The head is truncated at the anterior end with a slightly bulging frontal margin.
- The auricles are rounded and protruding laterally at the anterior end of the head.
- The coloration on the dorsal side is dark brown to almost black.
- The ventral side is somewhat lighter than the dorsal side.

- P. morgani is an inhabitant of springs and cold creeks of eastern North America from New Brunswick to North Carolina and as far west as Kentucky. They have also been found in El Dorado County, California.
- The animals are approximately 14mm long and 2mm wide.
- The head is rectangular with a truncated anterior end and rounded lateral edges.
- The auricles are flattened along the head.
- The coloration on both the dorsal and ventral sides is white.
- Their reproduction is asexual by fission.
